If an instructor isn't listed on the GOV.UK finder, you can still check them directly — contact DVSA with the instructor's name and ADI number if they have one.

1. Get your provisional licence. You need it before lessons or practice.
2. Choose an instructor. Check their status and ask about transmission, coverage, price and cancellation terms.
3. Learn and practise. Use the Highway Code and safe supervised practice.
4. Prepare for theory. Study the Highway Code, traffic signs and driving skills.
5. Pass the theory test. You need to pass before booking the car practical test.
6. Prepare for the practical test. Practise safely and make sure your instructor agrees you're ready.
7. Book the practical test. Use the official GOV.UK service rather than unofficial booking sites.
