New EU border rules — and ETIAS delayed again

The EU’s Entry/Exit System started on 12 October 2025 and replaces passport stamping for UK travellers. On a short trip to the Schengen area you may be asked to register biometric details — fingerprints and a photo — when you arrive. It does not apply to the Republic of Ireland or Cyprus, which sit outside the Schengen area.

The separate ETIAS authorisation is still not live, and no longer has a launch date. The EU removed its “last quarter of 2026” target from the official ETIAS website in July 2026, and the agency building the system has concluded a 2026 launch is not feasible — 2027 now looks the likely outcome. The official site says only that ETIAS is not in operation and no applications are being collected.

No action is needed from travellers. There will be a €20 fee once it launches, and the EU says it will announce the start date several months beforehand. Any website selling ETIAS today is doing so fraudulently — when it opens, apply only through the official EU website.

A GHIC is free — never pay for one

The UK GHIC is free, lasts up to 5 years, and you can apply for a replacement up to 9 months before your current card expires. The NHS warns that unofficial websites may charge a fee to apply. A GHIC is not a substitute for travel insurance.
