How to Find an NHS Dentist in Feltham

NHS dental access is a genuine national problem, not just a Feltham one. Nationally, only around 44% of NHS dental practices in England are currently accepting new NHS patients. Here's how to actually find one, and what to do if every practice says they're full.

The Honest Picture

NHS dentistry access is genuinely difficult right now, across the whole of England, not just here. As of early August 2026, an independent tracker of the official NHS Directory of Healthcare Services put around 2,819 of England's 6,446 NHS dental practices as currently flagged "accepting new NHS patients" — roughly 44%. This isn't unique to Feltham, and it isn't something we can fix by simply listing more dentists — the shortage is real.

Different measurement methods give very different numbers: a large-scale phone survey of practices by the BBC and British Dental Association in 2022 found a much lower acceptance rate, because it tested practices directly rather than relying on the "accepting patients" flag practices set on the official directory, which isn't always kept up to date. Treat any single figure, including ours, as an indication of a genuine crisis rather than a precise, stable number.

How to Find One — Step by Step

Use the official NHS Find a Dentist tool and search by your postcode — filter for practices marked as accepting new NHS patients.
See our Feltham Dentists list for local practices, then call ahead — "accepting patients" status changes often and listings can be out of date.
Ask directly: "Are you accepting new NHS adult patients?" If not, ask to be added to their waiting list anyway — you're more likely to get an appointment than if you don't try.
Unlike GPs, NHS dentists have no catchment area — you can register anywhere accepting patients, including practices in neighbouring towns if that's more practical.
Check back regularly — practices update their lists as existing patients move on, so a "full" practice this week might not be next week.

Don't put off seeing a GP about new or changing symptoms because you assume they're "just old age" — unexplained weight loss, persistent pain, unusual bleeding, or a lump or swelling anywhere should always be checked. NHS-Funded Nursing Care — a payment most families don't know about

If someone is in a nursing home and needs care from a registered nurse but doesn't qualify for full NHS Continuing Healthcare, the NHS should still be paying NHS-Funded Nursing Care (FNC) — a flat-rate weekly payment made directly to the nursing home, currently £267.68 a week (from 1 April 2026). It's not means-tested — income and savings don't affect it, and almost everyone in a nursing home needing registered nursing care should be receiving it.

It doesn't cover the full cost (accommodation, meals and personal care are separate), but it directly reduces the family's bill. If you're not sure whether it's already been applied, ask the nursing home or your GP/care worker to check — many families go months or years overpaying without knowing to ask.

Who typically pays privately

In England, whether the council contributes to your care costs depends on a financial (means-test) assessment, separate from the Care Needs Assessment. For 2026/27, if your capital (savings and, in some cases, property) is above £23,250, you're generally classed as a "self-funder" and expected to pay the full cost of your care yourself. Below £14,250, your capital is disregarded and you'd only contribute from income; between the two limits, you'd pay a tariff contribution. These capital limits have been frozen since 2010 and a previously planned increase (and a lifetime cap on care costs) was scrapped, not merely delayed.

Even if you expect to be a self-funder, it's still worth getting the free Care Needs Assessment (see below) — it identifies what support is actually needed and can inform how you plan and budget for private care, even where the council isn't paying.

Routine childhood vaccinations

Babies are offered the 6-in-1 vaccine (protecting against diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, polio, Hib and hepatitis B) at 8, 12 and 16 weeks, alongside MenB and rotavirus doses. At 1 year, children get the first MMRV dose (measles, mumps, rubella, chickenpox) plus pneumococcal and MenB boosters. A pre-school booster follows at 3 years 4 months. From January 2026, children born on or after 1 July 2024 also get a new 18-month appointment with a further 6-in-1 dose. Contact your GP or NHS vaccination service if any doses have been missed — catch-up is available at any age.

Flu vaccination

An annual flu vaccine is offered every autumn/winter. For children aged 2–15, this is usually a nasal spray, given at school for most school-age children or via GP/pharmacy for younger children. Adults become eligible at 65, and it's also offered to pregnant women, those with certain long-term health conditions, and carers. Many pharmacies now offer walk-in flu vaccination alongside GP surgeries.

COVID-19 vaccination

NHS COVID-19 vaccination is currently offered as a seasonal (spring and autumn/winter) programme, mainly to people aged 75 and over, care home residents, and those who are immunosuppressed or otherwise at higher clinical risk. Eligibility is reviewed each season by the NHS, so check current guidance rather than assuming last year's eligibility still applies.

HPV vaccination

The HPV vaccine, which helps protect against cervical and other HPV-related cancers, is offered to both girls and boys, usually from school Year 8 (age 12–13). It has moved to a single-dose schedule for most young people, rather than the two-dose course used previously.

Travel vaccinations

Some travel vaccines (such as typhoid, hepatitis A, and cholera) are available free on the NHS through your GP practice. Others — including yellow fever, rabies, and Japanese encephalitis — are usually only available privately, through a travel clinic or specialist pharmacy service, and are not NHS-funded. Check requirements for your specific destination well in advance, ideally 6–8 weeks before travel, since some vaccines need time to take effect or require multiple doses.

NHS Screening

Cervical screening

Offered to women and people with a cervix aged 25 to 64, every 5 years. It checks for high-risk HPV and helps prevent cervical cancer by catching abnormal cell changes early — it isn't itself a test for cancer. Follow the NHS invitation and appointment instructions sent to you.

Breast screening

Women aged 50 up to their 71st birthday are automatically invited for breast screening (a mammogram) every 3 years. Everyone aged 50 to 74 is sent a home test kit (FIT test) every 2 years to check for hidden blood in stool samples. Diabetic eye screening

Everyone with diabetes aged 12 and over is offered diabetic eye screening every 1 or 2 years (the exact interval depends on your last two results), to check for early signs of diabetic retinopathy. This is separate from a regular sight test with an optician and doesn't replace one.

Screening is different from diagnostic testing

Screening is for people without symptoms in an eligible group. If you have symptoms or concerns, seek clinical advice instead of waiting for screening.

The NHS in England has begun a phased rollout of HPV self-testing for people who have previously missed cervical screening invitations. Nearly 4 million women may be offered the option as the programme expands.

The initial rollout is aimed at people aged 30–65 who have not attended cervical screening after previous invitations. The home-testing option is invitation-only.
