Business Waste

Trade waste (anything from business activity) is not covered by household collections. You can bring it to Space Waye if pre-sorted — clean loads of a single recyclable material (paper, cardboard, metal, green waste) are charged at a lower rate (around £100 per tonne at the time of writing) than mixed trade waste. Report to the weighbridge on arrival.

Medicine Disposal

Every community pharmacy in England is legally required to accept unwanted or expired medicines from the public, free, with no appointment needed — this is an NHS Essential Service. Never put medicines in household bins or flush them. See our Pharmacies page for local options.

Litter & Fly-tipping

Fly-tipping (illegally dumping waste anywhere not an authorised site) is a criminal offence — penalties can reach a £50,000 fine or 12 months' imprisonment, rising to an unlimited fine and up to 5 years for serious cases that go to court. Report it and the council will normally remove it within 24 hours; your report is treated confidentially. Note any vehicle details if you saw one, but never approach anyone dumping waste.

Volunteering in Feltham runs through Ealing & Hounslow CVS, a registered charity that has supported voluntary groups in Hounslow since 2012 and now works with around 1,200 community organisations across the two boroughs. Its Volunteer Centre is the main route in.

⏲ How much time it takes

This is the part that puts people off unnecessarily. Roles range from one-off activities — a single event, a park clean-up, a fete — to ongoing weekly commitments. There is no minimum, and no expectation that you sign up for a year.

The Volunteer Centre provides specialist support for disabled volunteers and people with long-term health conditions, including help finding roles that fit around what you can manage. This is a named part of what they do, not an afterthought.

🏫 Volunteering with young people

Some schemes work with schools across Hounslow — coaching young people on confidence and resilience, for example. These usually recruit in rounds with a closing date rather than continuously, so it is worth checking rather than assuming nothing is open.

🖥️ Free computers and internet at the library

Library members get up to 120 minutes a day free on internet-connected computers at Feltham Community Hub & Library. You log in with your library card number and PIN, and membership is free.

What you can do on them: internet and web email, Microsoft Office, printing, free scanning, and saving to a memory stick.

Booking: not essential, but worth doing at busy times — you need your library card. A reservation is held for 10 minutes, then released. Some machines are drop-in only, capped at 15 minutes. Access ends 15 minutes before the library closes.

Under-18s can use them once a parent or guardian has filled in a permission form. Staff will help where they can, though it depends who is on duty.

Free drop-in help with email, online shopping, smartphones, tablets and filling in online forms. No booking needed.

Hounslow’s adult learning service has been known to lend laptops and Chromebooks to people enrolled on its courses, and local voluntary services have provided reconditioned devices. If you have no computer at all, it is worth asking at the library or through the Digital Champions contact above rather than assuming there is nothing.

Free wifi is available in libraries and other public spaces, which matters if you have a device but no broadband at home.

Admissions & choosing a school

Applications for a place starting in September 2027 opened on Monday 1 September 2026. If you live in Feltham your application goes to Hounslow Council, whichever schools you choose and wherever those schools are.

Key dates

Year 7 applications are for children born between 1 September 2015 and 31 August 2016. Year 3 junior transfer applications run on the same timetable as primary.

Before you apply

You can name six schools in order of preference for both primary and secondary, and Hounslow strongly recommend using all six — naming a single school does not make you more likely to get it. Schools are not told their position in your list, so a lower preference does not count against you.

You will need proof of address. Some schools, usually faith schools, also require a supplementary information form alongside the main application. Applications submitted after the deadline are classed as late and are only considered once every on-time application has been processed.

How places are decided

Each school sets its own admission criteria within Department for Education rules, so they are not all the same. Distance from the school, whether a sibling already attends, and religious criteria at faith schools are all commonly used. Hounslow publish how places were allocated in previous years, including the furthest distance offered at each school — useful if you are deciding whether a popular school is realistic from your address.

If none of your six schools can offer a place, the council will allocate one at any school that still has vacancies once all applications have been processed. Hounslow state plainly that this may be a school you did not consider and could be some distance from your home. You can then join a waiting list or appeal. Waiting lists are ordered by the school’s admission criteria rather than by how long you have waited, so a family applying later can be placed above you.

Open evenings

Secondary open evenings run through September and early October, before the 31 October deadline. Hounslow publish a borough-wide schedule, and most schools also offer daytime tours by appointment.

Term and holiday dates 2026/27

That framework sets 195 days, from which each school chooses five INSET training days, leaving 190 teaching days. Individual schools can therefore differ by a day or two, and academies — including Reach Academy Feltham and Springwest Academy — can set their own term dates entirely. Check with the school before booking travel.
