Jobs by Sector

Where to actually search, by sector — rather than us listing specific vacancies here, which go stale within days.

Construction & Trades

CITB (Construction Industry Training Board) runs the main apprenticeship and careers route into construction trades, including through its "Go Construct" careers site. For a trade qualification (electrician, plumber, etc.), check West Thames College's construction courses first — see Training below.

Cleaning & School Support Jobs

Cleaning is one of the most common entry points into work locally, and school cleaning in particular suits people who need term-time hours — typically 39 or 40 weeks a year, early mornings before school or late afternoons after it.

Lampton Services is the main one to know. It is wholly owned by Hounslow Council and provides cleaning across Hounslow schools, so its vacancies are council-linked rather than agency work. It pays the London Living Wage. Check careers.lamptongroup.co.uk — the list is often empty, so it is worth setting up their job alerts rather than checking repeatedly.

Individual schools also advertise their own cleaning, catering and site roles. The best single place to look is Teaching Vacancies, the Department for Education’s official service — it carries school support roles, not just teaching, and has a filter for Catering, cleaning and site management. School jobs in Hounslow →

Hounslow schools also use Work in Hounslow Schools and eTeach, and most schools list vacancies on their own website too.

A realistic note: school cleaning vacancies come up in bursts rather than continuously, usually around the start of term and after Christmas. At the time of writing there were none advertised in Hounslow. Job alerts are far more use than checking the sites each week.

Two things worth knowing before you apply. Anything in a school needs an enhanced DBS check, which the employer normally arranges. And term-time-only contracts are usually paid pro rata across twelve months, so the monthly figure will be lower than the hourly rate suggests — check what you will actually receive each month, not just the rate.

Private cleaning agencies also recruit constantly in TW13 and TW14. Rates can look higher, but much of that work is self-employed — no holiday pay, no sick pay, no pension, and you handle your own tax. Worth comparing properly against an employed role at a lower hourly rate.

Healthcare & Care Jobs

NHS Jobs is the official portal for all NHS roles, including at West Middlesex University Hospital and Chelsea and Westminster NHS Foundation Trust. For social care roles (care assistants, support workers), Hounslow Council and private care providers regularly recruit — check Hounslow Council's own jobs page and NHS Jobs directly rather than third-party aggregators for the most accurate, current listings.

Driving & Delivery Jobs

You'll need a full UK driving licence for most roles; some delivery work (e.g. for courier apps) accepts provisional stages of self-employment. Given Feltham's proximity to Heathrow, logistics and delivery roles are common locally — search "Feltham" or "Heathrow" directly on gov.uk/find-a-job rather than relying on any single named employer, since specific depots and contracts change.

Office & Professional Jobs

Reed and gov.uk/find-a-job both let you filter by "office," "admin" or specific professions and by distance from Feltham. Many office-based employers in this area are based in nearby Hounslow, Brentford or along the Great West Road corridor.

Part-Time, Flexible & Remote Work

On gov.uk/find-a-job, filter by "part-time" or search "remote" alongside your role. Be cautious of "work from home" adverts asking for money upfront or your bank details before any interview — a genuine employer never asks you to pay to work for them.

Disability & Supported Employment

If you have a disability or health condition affecting work, the Access to Work grant scheme can fund equipment, support workers or transport. See our full Disability Employment Support page for how to apply.

Apprenticeships

Paid work with training built in, leading to a real qualification. Open to anyone aged 16 or over living in England — not just school leavers.

How the pay works

Apprentices are employees with a contract, holiday and payslips. From 1 April 2026 the apprentice minimum wage is £8.00 an hour. That rate applies if you are under 19, or 19 and over but still in the first year of your apprenticeship.

Once you turn 19 and finish your first year, you move onto the normal minimum wage for your age — £10.85 an hour for 18 to 20 year olds, and £12.71 for 21 and over. Many employers pay well above the minimum, especially at Heathrow and in the NHS.

Your training is paid for by your employer and the government. You do not pay tuition fees, and you are not taking on a student loan.

Rates confirmed against the government's own Check Your Pay campaign site. They change every April.

checkyourpay.campaign.gov.uk

Finding one near Feltham

The government's Find an Apprenticeship service is the place to search. Put in TW13 or TW14 and set a radius — 10 miles from Feltham reaches Heathrow, Hounslow, Staines, Richmond and much of west London, which is a lot of employers.

Vacancies appear and close continuously rather than in one annual round, so it's worth checking weekly rather than waiting for a "season". You can create an account and save searches so new matches come to you.

findapprenticeship.service.gov.uk

Levels — what they actually mean

Intermediate (Level 2) is roughly GCSE standard and is the usual entry point with few or no qualifications. Advanced (Level 3) is A-level standard. Higher (Levels 4 and 5) is foundation-degree standard. Degree apprenticeships (Levels 6 and 7) get you a full degree while employed, with no tuition debt.

You do not have to start at Level 2. If you already have GCSEs, an Advanced apprenticeship may be the right starting point.

Local training providers

West Thames College in Isleworth is the closest major provider and delivers apprenticeships alongside its other courses. Hounslow Council also runs apprenticeship schemes within the council itself, and Work Hounslow can advise on apprenticeship routes as part of its free employment support.

Work Placements for Disabled People

Supported routes into paid work for people with a disability, learning disability or autism — including a programme running right here in the borough with an unusually strong track record.

Supported internships — the local route

A supported internship is a structured further education programme of up to a year, for young people aged 17 to 24 who have an Education, Health and Care Plan. Most of the time is spent in a real workplace with a job coach, rather than in a classroom, and the goal is paid employment at the end of it.

Hounslow runs two: DFN Project SEARCH and a programme with Ealing Mencap based at the University of West London.

Worth knowing before you apply: because a supported internship counts as the transition out of education, an EHCP ends when the internship ends. Ask the council's team to explain what that means in your situation.

hounslow.gov.uk

DFN Project SEARCH at West Thames College

A year-long supported internship for young people with a learning disability, autism or both, delivered by West Thames College with Hounslow Council. Interns do a series of work rotations with real employers rather than a single short placement — recent cohorts have worked at Hounslow Council, Thorpe Park and the London Twickenham Stadium Hotel, and past interns have gone on to jobs at Channel 4 and Heathrow Airport.

The results are genuinely good. West Thames reports around 70% of interns moving into paid employment each year, and the council says the programme has supported over 100 young people into full-time paid work across its first ten years. The aim is a job of 16 hours a week or more, not a work-experience certificate.

Applications go through the council's Project SEARCH team. Colleges usually hold open events between January and April for the following year, so it's worth making contact well before then.

Already have a job offer, or already working?

Access to Work is a government grant that can pay for equipment, software, a support worker or job coach, taxi fares if you can't use public transport, and communication support at interviews. You apply yourself — an employer cannot apply for you — and it's separate from your employer's legal duty to make reasonable adjustments.

Our Disability Employment Support page covers how to apply, the helpline numbers, and the processing delays disability charities have reported.

Work Hounslow — one-to-one support

The council's own employment service gives extra help to residents facing barriers to work, explicitly including people with special educational needs and disabilities and people who have been in care. Support runs from a first meeting with an advisor through career planning, applications and interviews, and continues after you start a job.

They work directly with Heathrow, the NHS and other large local employers to open up routes for residents, which is worth knowing if you are applying to any of them.
